Max This!

One of my IE 6 pet peeves is its inability to maximize to a full screen whenever a new window opens. Whenever I click on X to close a window, I end up closing another application that’s hidden behind it. Windows manages to open just enough to take up the entire screen, but not completely.

Enter a solution: IE New Window Maximizer. Works great! [Link NeatNetTricks]

No, I’m not about to insult someone. That’s the name of a site I found that has a collection of taglines or one-liners collected from the Internet. Select D and you’ll get "Dammit, Jim" Star Trek taglines.

Look around the site if you’re interested in code tidbits for ASP, VBScript, PHP, JavaScript and more. Nice ‘n clean site and easy to navigate. [Link MarkPasc]

IE Right-Click Power

Thursday, February 28th, 2002 at 7:30 AM | Category: Meryl's Notes Blog 1 comment

Today’s issue of Lockergnome Windows Daily has a tidbit called IE Booster that I plan to download for the home PC. Based on the description, when you right-click on a Web page (just like you do to copy and paste), it gives you options for showing only the hyperlinks, showing only images, showing CSS (style sheets), resizing the window, and other stuff.

The bookmarklets that Traumwind created, based on the CSS test files, would do some of this stuff. It’s a matter of preference: bookmarklet vs. right-click. Sorry, Mac’ers. I like you and I can’t help it if they only made it available for W9x/2K/XP users. Also, it works only with IE 5+.

Lockergnome has a screenshot of the right-click menu. While you’re there, go subscribe to the Windows Daily newsletter. This is my first emailed issue and I’m hooked. I didn’t subscribe because like you, I get way too much non-personal emails (can never have too many personal emails – send me one or comment anytime).

The way the newsletter is laid out makes it easy to do a quick scan. Definitely subscription-worthy! Chris, did I do good to get my reward? icon smile IE Right Click Power

Howdy to the Gnomemobile

Chris posted eight of ten blogs he regularly visits in today’s (Hi, Chris! You’re fab! You’re the best on TechTV! Did I brownnose enough?) Lockergnome Windows Daily.

He’s absolutely right… no L0tus N0tes here… hate ‘em and deal with ‘em at work. If you like ‘em, err… forget what I just said and visit again… please? Pretty please? Am I gonna have to grovel? Oh, I’m already doing that. Better stop before I get more ridiculous.

He has excellent taste since he listed buddies Robyn and Christine plus another regular on my schedule, Gary. With every urge to avoid adding more regular stops, I gave in to Chris’ brainwashing and swung by Mike McBride’s place (thumbs up). I plan to check out the others.

Then, I did it. I subscribed to THREE Lockergnome newsletters. Resistance is futile, definitely. If you don’t hear from me again, you’ll know that my emailbox buried me. I dare ya to subscribe, if you haven’t already. It’s gonna bug you until you do.

Dallas Mayor in the Blog News?

Wednesday, February 27th, 2002 at 7:10 AM | Category: Meryl's Notes Blog 5 comments

Imagine my surprise when I saw a note about the Dallas mayor in Mark’s blog. Never thought that the Dallas mayoral election would interest people outside of the Dallas area (I’m in Plano, so I can’t vote there). The original post comes from More Like This Web Log.

Yes, Laura Miller is a controversial person with a lot of opposition. But, she captured most of the Dallas elite neighborhoods. It was the minority neighborhoods that she lost to the opposition.

If the mayor was Larry Miller instead of Laura Miller, would people gripe about her personality? It’s going to be interesting to watch what she does for Dallas in 18 months before her term is up (she filled former mayor Ron Kirk’s spot when he resigned to run for another position).

Design Inspiration

While chatting with Mike, he mentioned Open Source Web Design as a great place to get Web design templates. I was about to go this route with my site (using pre-designed templates) after trying too long and too hard to get inspired with my own. However, I couldn’t find any templates I liked and that was before I knew about this site.

So, if you’re in a rut with redesigning your own site, maybe you’ll get that spark from the templates.

MT on TV

Ben and Mena, geniuses behind MovableType will be on TechTV | The Screen Savers today. [Note Blahblahblog]

As we see more published articles on weblogging, I’m disappointed and aggravated with each one. Typically, these articles only mention two weblogging applications and often overlook MT. I have yet to see Joel Spolsky‘s CityDesk mentioned in an article.

<rant>C’mon, journalists! Do your research and list more than two apps!</rant>
