When I went to work for a phone company three years ago, I got my first mobile phone because of the discount. It’s only used during emergencies or when I need to get a quick message to someone. The only way I could use it with hearing aids was to buy a $60 headset to cut out the interference (crackling noise) that made it tough to hear anything. This headset requires three hearing aid batteries to work and they die fast whether or not I use the phone. These batteries are NOT cheap.
BBC says that Deaf go mobile phone crazy, but my cell phone doesn’t allow me to send messages. I can receive messages, but it’s not easy. It requires giving people the Web site URL and the phone number to the cell to make it work. Too much for people to remember plus it requires being at a computer connected to the Internet.
I have a Palm Vx with a modem, but of course, I can’t send and receive messages on it when I drive since it requires more effort to connect. Plus, it’s too heavy to carry both devices compared to a phone.
Sounds like it’s time for something like an always on handheld like the new Palm 70x or RIM, but price is a factor.
