Moment of silence to remember those who died serving our country.
Note to self: Five Step Photolog. Saving for future reference. Excellent tutorial. [Link Robyn]
Malaspina Great Books is a long list of name says it all. The Guardian has a list of 100 works of fiction of all time. What do ya know? I read Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe in college. He’s only listed first because A is the first letter of the alphabet. [Link Rebecca]
p i x e l v i e w – behind the screen with Eric Brooks, the guy behind all the freebies and fun stuff. “If an asteroid were to hit the earth, it would hit Eric Brooks’ House. It wouldn’t stop him or slow him down.”
Section 508 ‘not as hard as people thought’ provides an update on how the government is doing in ensuring its sites are compliant with Section 508 to make Web pages accessible. Another surprise is that complying with the standards hasn’t caused a major drain on resources as originally thought.
kartoo is a pretty search engine that displays the results in a visual map using Flash. Naturally, I entered “meryl” and saw Meryl Y., me, links to Str33p, and a musician. Move the mouse pointer over the ball (no clicking needed) to get a description. Move the pointer over a topic like Contact or any of the items in the left hand corner to get more (or less) related on the topic. The green bars on the right indicate the number of Web sites related to the request. The more green bars, the more Web sites. Innovative, but can’t see it replacing Google, of course.
Even if you’re not a Web designer, ALA has an article that is for everyone who is online – Win the Spam Arms Race. It offers several suggestions for shoving spam to where the sun don’t shine.
Simple Content Management is an easy tutorial for building your own CMS using REBOL (don’t worry, I never heard of it until today). Some of you love a challenge of creating your own thing and I dare you to try this out.
Speaking of spam, BBC has a list of Top 10 Email Spams Exposed. Yeah, I’ve been getting the Nigerian money offer daily, sometimes multiple times. One writer decided to respond to the email and had a hilarious thread of the email exchange. Alas, I can’t remember where it is on the Web.
It’s holiday weekend, so most of y’all are probably out enjoying the weather (if it’s nice) or just doing fun things.
I took a quick glance at kharon4a and it’s use of Flash in the game is incredible. It’s a sci-fi adventure type game. Gamers can waste the weekend here.
Jean-Baptiste takes a comphrensive look at different ways to integrate footnotes (or side notes or end notes or other notes) into text. Scroll to the bottom of Piggin.Net Macro-Typography: Footnotes to see examples. A valuable resource for educational institutions and anyone who writes papers with all those notes embedded.
May must be flash from the past month. I met with Jason Scott who is working on the BBS Documentary. Man, talk about digging through the cobwebs trying to recall my life in BBSes (pre-Internet days, folks). Jason is amazing. He manages to keep track of everyone and every film. He isn’t an axe murderer. I survived my interview with him.
Then, I accidentally came across Apple II History. Suddenly, I remembered the error I hated so much: ?reenter
I’m embarrassed to say that I thought it was pronounced like “reader” rather than “re-enter.” Gimme a break. I was only 10 when I played with the Apple ][+. I hated that damned error message and nearly smacked the machine almost every day. Then, of course, there was ?syntax error.
Ah, but I’ve got plenty of good memories of those jolly good Apple days.
