Matt Haughey paid Google Answers to verify the date Netscape v4.0 arrived in the Web world. The answer was June 11, 1997. Ironically, on the day that Web Standards Project relaunches, Netscape v4.0 celebrates its 5th birthday. This is not a happy celebration. I admit it took me a long time to finally dump Netscape 4.0 as my primary browser and email client, but I had other browsers loaded for standards purposes. Now, Netscape 4.0 is a testing client and nothing more.
Scott Andrew has a creative birthday presentation for Netscape with an ending that echoes what many Web designers and the WaSP are feeling about it. Go away, Netscape v4.0. Shoo.
