High Wi-Fi

Surf the Friendly Skies is not only about staying connected while in the air, but also using Wi-Fi as a security measure. I’m eager to see Internet surfing to catch air waves to keep me occupied on a long flight. I think, for me anyway, time will fly faster having the capability while flying.

Googly Column

Tara Calishain, a confessed search addict and creator of ResearchBuzz has a new monlthy column on Internet search. Already, I like her style as reflected in Eight Search Engine “C” Changes and Why Try to Out-Google Google?

When someone is tapped to write about something she loves, she is likely to share that with a big chunk of enthusiasm, and Tara does exactly that.

Desktop Project

Wednesday, May 21st, 2003 at 8:14 AM | Category: Meryl's Notes Blog No comments

I enjoy the [blank] project type of sites. It probably started with The Mirror Project and more and more have joined the fray. No matter how many projects there are, they’re fun and diverse. The newest one discovered is the Desktop Project, which just posted my entry.

My desk, as shown in this photo, is far too messy for my taste. I have thank you notes to write, kids putting stuff on my desk (like the homemade flowers), the burp rag (gee, I wonder why?), and paperwork. The big water cup is always on the desk.

Anyway, take a pic of your desk and submit it to the Desktop Project. Let’s see where you spend most of your time.

In the Comparison Between Left- and Right-justified Site Navigation Menus study, the usability of two Web page layouts was compared: one with the navigation menu on the left and the other on the right. 64 participants were divided into two groups to test the hypothesis that left-hand navigation would perform better than right-hand navigation. See what the study discovered.

37signal’s Google Vision

Tuesday, May 13th, 2003 at 4:01 PM | Category: Meryl's Notes Blog No comments

From the company’s newsletter, “We love Google (who doesn’t?), but we have an idea to make Google even better. As good as their search engine is, the results are only as good as the search terms you enter. How can you know if
“african coffee trade” is a better search than “africa’s coffee trading” when you’re doing research? You can’t possibly know, but Google can. To help you discern between different synonyms and related terms, Google could provide a way to search for slight variations of your initial query and flag the ones that differ. This mockup will help illustrate how 37signals envisions this functionality.”

What do you think of 37signal’s bold move to attempt to build a better Google?

Yikes!

Just saw I have not updated this place since May 6… I guess having a new baby, taking care of myself (after two surgeries), and the usual daily stuff makes things easily slip my mind. I still need to create an online Mom Brag Album for the new baby… but must take care of the deadline stuff first like Lockergnome, InternetVIZ, and InformIT work.

It looks like blogging continues to make news with Six Apart proposing a core standard for RSS, Google is to create a search tool for blogs, and DayPop’s balloon may bust because of Google.

RSS It to Me

RSS is hot stuff with more programs coming out to make it easy to get all your favorite news and blogs in one spot. I often get emails from Lockergnome readers asking about RSS. Shirley has put together RSS Resources, which includes feedreaders, books, tutorials, tips, registering and finding feeds, and much more.
