Funny, I was thinking about the topic of Students shirk cursive rules in third grade for the past year while my daughter was in third grade. She learned cursive, but she also uses the computer in the classroom to do reports.
I have a personal journal that I’ve kept since 1989 and it’s all handwritten. Whenever I write a page or longer, my hand hurts since I seldomly write with a pen or pencil. But I agree with Christine that there is something to be said for handwritten notes.
Every year on a child’s birthday, I write a letter to the child reflecting on the past year. Unfortunately, in the past few years these letters have been typed instead of written. With the little time I have, I find it faster to use the computer than to write it. At least, I have my eight books of journals for the kids to read someday and get a feel for my writing.
Cursive is still important and I agree with my daughter’s school’s approach — teaching cursive and computing.
