A Recipe for Learning Web Design

If you haven’t quite broken into Web design or have been fiddling with it, this Digital Web Magazine article is a good one to read. It explores how one can become a Web designer and whether or not a formal education is a step toward that goal.

Every (and I can honestly say *every*) successful Web designer I know didn’t have formal education when breaking into Web design. Some have a talent for art and design in general. Others for code. They just melded their existing skills and taught themselves the rest. Another important skill is sales. For without selling yourself, you can’t get clients other than yourself.

No portfolio? Start by building your own site. After all, once you get many clients, you won’t have time to update your site. So take advantage of this time. What about non-profit organizations of which you’re passionate? It’s a great opportunity to do volunteer work while building a portfolio.
