Microsoft reports on the updates to its Internet Explorer functionality that comes with MS Windows XP Service Pack 2. Highlights include a pop-up blocker, add-on install prompt, information bar, and MIME handling enforcement. ZDNet has an article on the changes.
What do you think? Too little too late? Unlikely to resolve the security issues it has? Personally, I wouldn’t trust it until it has been out there for at least six months.

IE Update in XP SP2
Yesterday, So Matt ranted about the “new IE.” Here is more information as Microsoft reports on the updates to its Internet Explorer functionality that comes with MS Windows XP Service Pack 2. Highlights include a pop-up blocker, add-on install prompt,…
I’ve been using it for the past couple days and i have nothing but good things to say. It blocks all popups, the install prompts work nicely. All in all, its a very nice update…finally.
I think the people who need it are the less techie types and they are also the least likely users to install it. Most experienced users already have a lot of third-party protection and/or security settings.
I’ve had SP2 RC2 running on my XP Home edition since the first week in JULY. It installed easily without the normal “prep” beforehand, e.g. cleaning up and/or backing up. Updated to final edition on 8/11. I’m really VERY pleased with it. I’ve “played around” with it with no catastrophies.
Users of Mozilla & Firefox have had all these features for many months (some perks for years). Why all the fuss? Switch from IE/OE to one of the better alternatives, including Opera (not gratis for ad-free) and you’ll wonder why Microsoft made you suffer those pains for so long.
One “‘functionality’” (use of superfluous quotation marks denoted extreme sarcasm) that Microsoft fails to boast about is that your IE homepage is reset to http://msn.com, regardless of what you previously had used as your IE home page.
I am running XP professional and I am very happen with sp2 and reconevd that everyone gives it ago. I have had it on my machine since release and no problems. Go get it.

I installed sp2 on two computers and had no problems so far. Oh and no, it did not change my homepage. (I use firefox, but msn is not my ie homepage)
I’ve been using the release candidates since March and had next to no problems. That said, I still prefer Firefox, simply because it has more features that I want (like tabbed browsing) and doesn’t include advertising like Opera does.
Incidently my home page wasn’t changed either.
My home page didn’t get changed either.
I wish Microsoft had fixed the CSS rendering bugs and lack of PNG transparency that have plagued IE for several years now. The PNG transparency bug is especially annoying given that PowerPoint 2000 handles alpha transparency in PNGs with no problem whatsoever…
Ah, well, at least it’ll prevent me from getting spyware foisted on my system when I go to a site requiring IE.
Installed on 2 PCs yesterday. One re-booted no bother but the second one wouldn
t boot. At first it refused to recognise either my hard-drive or the optical drives.Only by performing a hard re-set would it POST and then load the operating system. Having said that I have had no problems so far. I have opted to use my own copy of Zone Alarm on one PC and the new XP one on the other to compare performance. Im not sure though that it will meet codeman38s expectations in preventing spyware!!!t alter my home page on either PC.Also it didn
When is Service Pack 2 scheduled for release on Windows Update? Is it something I can download now manually?
You have to congratulate Microsoft for Service Pack 2. It is AMAZING! I have been running all weekend after installing it and my operating system has never been so secure, it’s completely locked down. Just try and hack me nasty crackers!!!!!!!
The popup blocker just has to be seen to be believed, no matter what illegal code the website tries to inject into the browser component, the blocking system removes it. Every time!
I think people will start to come back from Linux now they see how good Windows is. You can’t get popup blockers or port blockers on their silly systems!
