Another day, another round up of more stuff popping up on Win XP SP2. From Geek News Central: Gates Co. reports that users with SP2 wishing to use Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer version 1.2.1 must update the security application due to changes in the way the OS handles security.

Microsoft is prepared for users who run into challenges in installing SP2 by setting up online chats and Webcasts, which occur through this month. TechConnect has the transcript from the September 1 Webcast.

One guy’s experience with SP2 for two weeks. He says the success rate has been high.

SP2 is troublemaker for 10 percent of Windows XP PCs. One out of every 10 PC.

PC makers say to do homework before loading SP2. Does SP2 provide a false sense of security? Read an evaluation of XP2′s security features, which were tested on a test machine after a clean install of XP Pro with no configuration changes, no third-party software or drivers installed.

SP2 vs. the plug-ins looks at the new adventures users will have with plug-ins after installing… you know.

Up to our you-know-what advises network managers to test and test often when patching Windows and provides tips on best practices.

What US-Cert has to say. Hint: Install, but be cautious.

Spyware could cause problems with installing SP2, but hey… spyware should already be causing problems, so keep cleaning up that PC.

Long rant from Tech Republic on why SP2 deserved every shred of the scrutiny. Short version: SP2 is so messed up that all the badmouthing and the Trustworthy Computing Initiative can’t be ignored.

Microsoft Japan is giving away more than one million SP2 CDs from 27,500 locations. 52 percent of the users are connected by narrowband. More SP2 international news.

Meryl – I hear the percentage of computers having trouble with SP-2 is greater than 10 percent — 40 or 50 percent I’d say.
My Dell Dimension is teribly screwed up. I spent all last week end talking 15 hours a day with tecnicians in India (Dell, Symantec, Earthlink, and Microsoft out-sourcing outfits). I finally gave up and bought a new HP. And I’m spending this week-end trying to get up to speed on it. Next week I’ll get the hard drive out of my dell, extract my files and install them on my HP. Then I’ll reformat the Dell hard drive and give the whole set-up away to charity or sell it or something. I’m 75 years old and don’t take kindly to all this crap. Microsoft is in line for some huge litigation over SP-2 and I’ll bet they’ll be paying millions or more for their inept execution of this one!

I have installed SP2 on 4 computers and have had only one minor problem with Norton Anti-Virus 2003 (SP2 isn’t able to monitor whether the AV software is up-to-date). No problem with SP2 from my view.
