I agree that VoIP is the future having spent years in the communications industry the writing is on the wall. Just as analog cell phones were turned off at some point the analog backbone will be as well for home and business phones. It just makes sense. As far as Skype have used it and it is free as long as you call other Skype users. Personally I don't like the fact that I have to use a headset and being sitting in front of my computer to use it. I have friends that use it all the time but the quality is not there at least yet.

Scotts last blog post..Cut Your Expenses

[...] I hope to get a master’s degree when the time comes and I plan to work on it through an online program. I work with New York University’s master’s of science in management and systems. The program has one drawback: weekly online lectures complete with audio. With VoIP and applications like Centra, I fear more universities will add online and audio lectures to their curriculum by the time I find the time to start a master’s program. [...]

Started using Sipgate with an ATA and an ordinary phone plugged in. This gives me the facility to use it when the computer is switched off, and also to call landline numbers at a cheap rate. I also get an incomming number which keeps the Pots phone available to use as well.

I've used Skype and it appears to the better out of the free ones. I did have to tweak with things and work out the best place to place the mic and my conclusion is using a headset with a mic is best.

I use X world lite free dialup, it is brilliant, and free! You just need a headset and the phone is on the desktop.

Meryl:

You make two comments about Skype without explaining what they are. I would be interested in knowing the answers to both statements since I am a Skype user and don't know what I'm missing. Regards.

Skype is free and popular, but it is also has its problems. You get what you don't pay for.

There are other higher quality VoIP products that are more reliable. Skype is missing important features that professionals would need when using this tool.
