Tungsten E

You probably know about the recent release of the Tungsten E Handheld. I am surprised about one thing: it comes with Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi or both. I have a Tungsten T3 and am happy with it. Although, it has Bluetooth and not Wi-Fi. With more Wi-Fi hotspots coming out and SBC recent announcement of offering the service for USD$2 a month, it’s a shame it doesn’t have it included. I have nothing that is Bluetooth-compatible to connect to the T3. If you wonder about a cell phone, I don’t have one.

The cell phone is probably the best reason to have a Bluetooth handheld. If it has Internet access, you can Bluetooth the handheld to the cell and use the Internet on it. Wi-Fi would be a cheaper option for me.

What is your opinion on the fact the Tungsten E comes with Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi or both? Comment away.

I personally think that PalmOne has dropped the ball on this matter. With companies like SBC promising wi-fi spots everywhere and with the success of so many T-mobile hot spots, not to mention that many Microsoft based handhelds are coming out with wi-fi built in. Now recently palmOne has announced their new Trio 650. PalmOne has no plan to add wi-fi to the unit or allow even for an sd card based device to operate with it. Their new T5 model also does not have built in wi-fi. I have been a long time Palm supporter and user, and personally have been waiting a long time for a palm based unit with built in wi-fi that doesn’t run on a an archaic version of the Palm software (i.e. tungsten C). If Palm keeps going with this trend, I will be forced to move to a Microsoft based product. Their two latest releases, the Trio 650, and the TT5 have been a dissapointment to say the least.

However, if you have a Bluetooth phone (w/ Data as part of your plan), you can be your own hotspot (especially with 3G popping up now). You don’t have to go looking for a hotspot, just pair use your phone to connect & you can get email & everything as long as you have cellular coverage. But I guess when you don’t have a Bluetooth phone, you’re stuck.

Actually, the Tungsten T3 and one of the Zire’s have a Wi-Fi SD card. This is unfortunately unavailable for the others yet, including the recently released Tungsten T5, and unfortunately unavailable in the one I own, the Tungsten T2!
