I dumped the security code plug-in. It was hopeless. Instead, I found this excellent article that explains the different types of comment spam and provides 10 ways to fight it. The more you implement, the harder it is to get com-spammed.

I only ran into two errors during this process and one required changing the name of the .cgi file name reference (I had changed the file name, but missed one place where it needed changing). The other one—I accidentally deleted the POST button from the Preview Comment template. When I put it back in, I saw it was good.
