Newsletters Are Alive and Well

Some experts have been saying newsletters are dead, and long live RSS (for details on what it is, refer to this article). This is a confusing message since RSS isn’t something that works alone. It relies on content and content can come from anywhere—a Web site, a newsletter, a blog … Even though I’m not a numbers person, I quote stats in this month’s newsletter feature to show how well newsletters are doing.

Also, as a reader of many newsletters and a user of an RSS aggregator, I still prefer newsletters in my emailbox over opening my aggregator. Many people feel that way, but many also feel the opposite—they don’t want anything in their mailboxes and everything in their news reader.

Some people favor soda from a bottle, while others prefer cans, and still others favor the fountain (Me! Especially with crushed ice). But all have the same result—a cold refreshing drink. Receiving a newsletter in email or in a reader leads to the same result—content.

But RSS does provide a way around the whole Spam issue and certain eNewsletters ending up being blocked by your spam filter or being diverted to your bluk/trash. Likewise placing your newsletter out via RSS also stops any bouncebacks.

I would still favour an eNewsletter over an RSS aggregator..I think there is also the perception for many people in the workplace that surfing an RSS aggregator might not seen by others as ‘working’ – whereas checking your emails and reading content via that – will always be deemed as working.

I agree entirely – none are dead – I prefer email!

[BTW I recently unsubscribed from Lockergnome this year after many years of happy devotion - the new format is just content-less]

    best regards 8)
