How the Internet Impacts Books

Blogging and the Internet have made it possible to talk about one of my favorite things: books. I’ve written many book reviews, joined online book club discussions, met authors who eventually asked me to contribute to their books, and get involved in discussions of specific books.

A few authors have posted bits and pieces of their books in their blogs for feedback and tweaked them based on reader feedback. The Internet also allows us to read excerpts of books so we can decide if we want to buy the book or not. Sure, you can read the whole book in a bricks ‘n mortar store, but do you have enough time to read? With the Internet, you can download and read later or read a little at a time.

Publishers offer free reading guides on their web sites to help book clubs with their discussions. We can connect with authors through their or their publishers’ web sites. Some are willing to join a book club discussion by phone. Harper Collins can keep you informed of your favorite authors and let you know who is coming to your town. You can read books before they’re published.

Just learned about an online book fair. The Love of Reading Book Fair is a three-day event runs from today through Thursday. According to the news release, this is what we can expect:

* Hourly book giveaways, promoting sponsor sites that help us get the word out.
* Daily guest bloggers page to showcase participating bloggers’ talents and sites.
* Book group giveaways to include a number of free copies and a 1 hour phone session with an author.
* Podcast interview features with authors recorded on MSNBC, AOL and Written Voices.
* Author contributed articles and book recommendations.
* Publishers’ exhibits introducing their top fall titles.

Book giveaways! Maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned the fair now that you know about it and I’ll have to compete with your entries. icon smile How the Internet Impacts Books

Thanks Meryl for your entry about the impact the Internet is having on the world of reading, writing, and publishing! I absolutely LOVE the online bookfair that is being hosted by FSB Assocites this year. The concept is FABULOUS and I’m having a excellent time hearing various author excerpts/readings, entering contests every hour on the hour, and learning about terrifics blogs like this one!
