Four Ways to Post When Dealing with Blogging Burnout

Been experiencing the worst blogging burnout in the past month or so. It could simply be because I’m busier than usual. I typically blog first thing to get it out of the way and proceed with my day. But sometimes it takes too much time and I want to jump into client work.

How do you deal with burnout? No one wants to take a break from blogging and risk losing momentum. Burnout typically prevents me from coming up with a strong essay-style entry or expanding on notes I’ve saved for a rainy post.

I’ve seen those long lists of blog post ideas. While great resources, when you’re this burned out… a lot of them don’t sound good or you don’t want to read through the list to find the shortcuts. Here is a short list of what helps me through it:

  1. Post less rather than stop altogether. I shoot for at least twice a week.
  2. List links to interesting Web pages and sites — I do this every Friday. Takes little time as I collect links over the week.
  3. Collect resources from a favorite or interesting topic such as 175+ information visualization resources. Sure, this takes more than a sitting to do, but I added to it over time and when the resources slowed down… I posted; hence, the + in the name so I can keep updating it.
  4. Write a short comment on another blogger’s entry, an article, a hot topic. We all have opinions or thoughts about something, so this should compel you to write a quick entry.

All righty! I’ve got my post for the week. :)
