This year’s Blog Action Day looks at poverty. Thanks to my daughter, I learned about an innovative product that helps those living in poverty.
When my daughter collected cash gifts, she donated 15% to Darfur to buy Berkeley-Darfur stoves for families. My daughter explains why she did this:
Darfur is a place in Africa where a great deal of genocide and mass murder. Millions have been killed, and the government is causing it. I’d like to see good wishes sent to places like Darfur and the unfortunate who need help. I care about it because I believe everyone should have the option to at least help themselves, and they don’t even have that. I want people to take action and spread the knowledge, even possibly making it more of a grateful nation.
These stoves don’t just help these families, but they’re also more efficient than three-stone fires and clay stoves.
The facts regarding fuel wood amaze:

Hey Meryl,
How great that your daughter has gotten involved with something that will have such an impact on people who truly need it.
I agree with her. Everyone should have the chance to help themselves. If we can help give them that chance, then why not?

@Kouji, @SocialReformer and @Amy — Thank you for your kind words.
Amy — you remind me of that proverb many of us have heard numerous times… “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.”
It’s heartbreaking to hear women get raped while simply looking for wood and spending seven hours trekking.
Glad to see you could share such a great story about your daughter on Blog Action Day. She truly has a beautiful heart to spread the word about a cause she is passionate and it is wonderful you took the time to share her story. I work with Survivor Corp, an organization intent on also raising awareness of the effects of war and the survivors that live through their hardships to tell their tale. Government is not going to change anytime soon but there is a hope that the abundance of survivors grow through multiple venuse of charity.
Thank you, Katie. And to think I was struggling for days to figure out what to write about on poverty. I love the ideas so many people came up with in their posts. Thanks for the pointer to Survivor Corp.
Thank you for sharing! Here is a link to GuluWalk 2008 as well. SC does much work for survivors in Uganda and right now we are spreading the word about the gulu walk many experience.
