One of my practices has been writing to a brief word count. I found that it helped me do two things. First,I got much better at editing. Second, I got a sense of the flow of the word count. There were times that I wrote to within 1 or 2 words of the final 100. I could tell when I'd gone on too long or when I was drifting into another topic.
(woot! 103 words without an edit!)
And what does this have to do with getting out of my comfort zone? I can write a rambling 2500 words in a heartbeat! For me, effective brevity was the challenge.

Andrew, you hit it. I may have been writing for business for almost a decade -- but on occasion, I'll hit something new and uncomfortable. It keeps me sharp and expands my skills. But sometimes we go a long time without that... and that's OK.

Merryl,

A three hour tennis match sounds like more than I could personally handle - one set lasting just over thirty minutes sounds challenging enough.

With writing, I think it is important to get out of our comfort zones every now and then and try something different. That said, I haven't really done much of that myself over the past year or so.
