Andrew, I can’t imagine how different the US and Aus rules are. From a tax perspective — if you have an app that can give you an idea of your income minus expenses in a report — you’re golden.

Meryl,

This reminds me of my first job as an accountant for a small accounting firm, where I did tax returns day in and day out (boring!).

Being Australian, I can’t make much comment about the American system, but sometimes I think small business owners have to be superheroes in order to manage and run their business as well as keep up with the compliance work relating to tax and other matters.

As you say, some of the small business accounting packages seem to make this a whole lot easier, as can the use of services of a professional accountant, but it is still a time consuming process nonetheless.

I would bet a lot of folks who get into freelance writing don’t consider this aspect when they are planning their business.

You don’t want to goof this up. The IRS would be a yukky enemy to have.

Great article. There is a lot to keep track of when you are self employed, no matter what you are doing. It helps to hire a tax professional if you aren’t comfortable with numbers, but make sure you keep good records.
