It's trying to be its own app. But I try to keep open and explore what's big because sites do die or lose their audience. If I follow anyone popular, the conversation threads are unwieldy. If I follow many people, the tweets are overwhelming. But for now, I turned it off. I uses email differently than other media - it's for communicating directly with me.
